Pushkar Fair: Camels, Competitions, and “Old is Gold”

Location: Pushkar, Rajasthan, India Event: The Pushkar Mela (Fair)

The Pushkar Fair has been absolutely amazing. It’s a long fair, and we have met wonderful people and done incredible things. But first—safety first! If you’re petting all the animals like I am, make sure you have the hand sanitizer ready.

Entering the “Gladiator Arena”

We headed into the heart of the Mela, which has basically turned into a gladiator arena. There are camels everywhere and so much energy in the air.

We even got signed up for some competitions!

The Women’s Event: Racing on One Leg

I (Heather) participated in an event just for the women. I didn’t win, but I felt like I could have! I came out of the gate so fast—on one leg! It was an awesome experience, and I’m so glad they had an event dedicated to the girls.

The Main Event: Locals vs. Foreigners (Football Edition)

Then, it was John’s turn. He got talked into a soccer match: Locals vs. Foreigners. > “He’s been sent off to play football in his sandals!”

The atmosphere was intense. John was introducing himself to every member of the team. They were asking if he could play for 90 minutes (45-minute halves), and looking at how young the other players were, we definitely felt like the “Mavericks” out there.

John’s Strategy: * Position: Goalkeeper (to avoid running!)

  • Advice: “Fall on the ground.”

  • Attire: Sandals and full power.

Match Highlights & The “Maverick” Spirit

The score started strong with the tourists leading 1-0. John was being awesome in the goal—until the tackles started flying.

In the end, India took the win. Honestly? We wanted India to win anyway! It was a great team effort. John came off the field with a battle scar—half a toenail came off during a kick—but in true Maverick fashion, he said, “No problem!”

Old is Gold

John even had fans asking for autographs! When he told the locals he was 51, they didn’t believe him, saying, “No, you’re 31!”

We ended the day with a participation trophy for the domestic football match. As they say in India: “Old is Gold, Mama!” Whether it’s a second-place trophy or an “oldest first place” title, we’ll take it. Pushkar, you have our hearts (and a piece of John’s toenail).
